The NFL realizes that we all must try to end systemic racism. We think it will take about 10 years and a lot of PR money to promote our new social justice initiatives. The NFL is listening to it's critics.
Getting rid of bad actors like Gruden, we took immediate action, decades later, by allowing him to respectfully resign. The recent resignation of NFL coach Gruden due to emails (from 2011) where he used racist language has exposed the many race-based thinking and practices that the NFL uses systemically.
On June 2, 2021, the NFL announced it would discontinue the use of race-norming—the practice of assuming a lower baseline of cognitive abilities in Black players—in legal settlements for concussion-related injuries.
For the past several years, Black former professional football players have been speaking out against the practice.
Now that the public is more aware of our racist polices and employees, the NFL is looking forward to working with Colin Kaepernick to help us do better.
It's not enough to just say we are not racist. We must learn how to be anti-racist. Systemic racism means it is built within the system and not only in football, with white owners calling all the shots.
